"God Almighty first planted a garden.
And indeed it is the purest of human pleasures.
It is the greatest refreshment to the spirits of man;
without which, buildings and palaces
are but gross handiworks."

From: Of Gardens
Francis Bacon (1561 - 1626)

These famous words by Francis Bacon strike a chord with me. Gardens bring places to life, allowing buildings and palaces (and the homes most of us live in) to be more than just bricks and mortar. Provided of course, the garden meets its owner’s needs and fits well into its surroundings.

Over more than 30 years as a gardener, garden designer, and hands-on garden professional, I’ve learnt what makes a garden a pleasure to be in. Above all, a good garden is comfortable, welcoming and peaceful, with something to offer in every season. And that doesn’t require a huge garden or an enormous budget.

Whether you’re looking for a completely new garden, your existing garden needs a thorough refresh, or you simply want regular maintenance, I’ll make sure it gets done – and done well. So that your garden will look beautiful and stays that way.

I studied Garden Design and Horticulture at the University of Lincoln in England. I then lived and worked in England and France and, until 2025, in the United States (Atlanta), where I was a partner at McGill & Fleming Landscapes. And now I live in the Netherlands. I’m a member of the Royal Dutch Society for Garden and Landscape Architecture and the UK’s Society of Garden and Landscape Designers.
